T-MOSAiC

T-MOSAiC is an IASC pan-Arctic, land-based program that extends the activities of the IASC flagship program MOSAiC: ‘The Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate’, MOSAiC is a multinational year-round study (2019-2020) of the central Arctic Ocean to measure the coupling between atmosphere, sea ice, ocean and ecosystem processes.

The objective of the satellite program T-MOSAiC is to coordinate complementary activities that will both aid and benefit from MOSAiC (especially the modelling components) by extending the work to the lands surrounding the Arctic Ocean and to the northern communities who live on those lands.

T-MOSAiC in Science
Extreme events were observed in summer 2020 throughout the circumpolar Arctic.  In this T MOSAiC article, Warwick Vincent and Derek Mueller describe changes taking place along the northern coast of Canada over the last few years in the ‘Last Ice Area’, including collapse of the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf (see photo). The thick, persistent sea ice of this area has a strong influence on the coastal terrestrial environment. The article can be downloaded here.

Permafrost Thaw AG at the PermafrostNet Annual Meeting
The permafrost thaw action group attended the annual meeting of PermafrostNet on November 18 to represent T-MOSAiC. This NSERC network is led by Stephan Gruber and it was very nice and well-organized meeting. We had several people attending our T-MOSAiC break out session with interest about our standardized protocol to measure permafrost thaw.
If you are interested in the protocol at your site, please contact the AG Chairs. Soon a great mobile app for recording data will be released.
